School News: On Feb. 10, the boys’ basketball team won the DVL title. The team was led by co-captain Marcelo Zepeda ‘17 into overtime against Palm Springs High for a close game of 54-53. Throughout the intense game, neither team had more than a six-point lead. To solidify their win, Zepeda made a defensive play that blocked a shot as the buzzer rang.
Local News: The annual Date Festival returned to the Indio Fairgrounds. Since 1947, the Date Festival has blessed the valley with ostrich races, the thrill of almost falling off the rides, the art pieces, and many other treats. The Date Festival isn’t all fun and fried foods, as there were four people hospitalized with stab wounds.
National News: The New England Patriots won the Super Bowl against the Atlanta Falcons in Houston on Feb. 5. During the third quarter of the game, the Patriots made a 25-point comeback, which is the largest comeback in Super Bowl history. The final score of the game was 34-28.
International News: President Donald Trump initiated Executive Order 13769 to ban immigrants from countries with Muslim-majority populations for 90 days. In addition to banning travelers from Muslim-majority nations, this resulted in immigrants from Syria being banned indefinitely. On Feb. 3, the ban was deemed unconstitutional by District Judge James Robart in Seattle and was blocked nationwide.
