Struggling to live in the moment is a predicament many can relate to—especially during the pandemic. Many have lost most of their freedom due to being confined inside their homes, and the amount of time spent with friends and family has been limited.

The days have blended together.

This is especially true for Aaron Morales ‘21, a senior at La Quinta High School, who has felt this way for quite some time now.

“I look to the sunrise, but I never really realized I live in the moment when I should,” he said. “So, and when I do, it’s undecided. I feel like I have so many choices when in reality, I’m not sure.”

One thing Morales does to overcome this struggle is having conversations with friends. “I talk to some friends. I think it’s the conversations and where they lead helps out. Either it’s interesting or something you could agree to disagree on,” he said.

Morales believes he is overcoming this struggle one day at a time.

“Oh yeah, day by day. That’s all you can ever do,” said Morales. “[It] depends on the mindset as well. You wouldn’t want to think you’re above it all.”

Sometimes it’s just tolerating the struggle, he said, and moving on to the next one.

“The most important thing is to not lose yourself,” Morales said. “You may lose things, people, but the biggest tragedy that can ever go upon you is losing yourself. I think you should keep knowing who you are.”

And for who he wants to be?

“[I want to] be happy,” he said.
