Coachella Line-Up 2018: Yay or Nay?

With the recently announced Coachella lineup, many festival-goers seem extremely split on the artists chosen for this year’s event. This year’s headlining acts include The Weeknd, Beyoncé, and Eminem.

Popular artists who will be performing also include SZA, Vince Staples, Tyler the Creator, BROCKHAMPTON, Daniel Caesar, Migos, Portugal. The Man, King Krule and Miguel.

A factor that has played into the split opinions on this year’s Coachella lineup is that it’s packed with smaller names, which could be either positive or negative. Here’s what a handful of La Quinta High School students had to say when asked about their thoughts on the lineup.

Yeah:

“I think the headliners are terrible, but I am happy that a lot of the really great smaller/ underground artists are performing because it’s like they’re finally getting the recognition they deserve,” said Cierra Bailey ‘18.

“I liked it because I thought it was kind of a throwback to what Coachella used to be like — namely a bunch of smaller scale indie-esque bands and less mainstream rap artists,” said Jeremy Baker ‘18.

“To keep it simple, I don’t listen to many of the artists on the lineup. Like last year, instead of complaining, I’m being open-minded; so when I go to Coachella and see performances from artists I don’t know very well, I’ll hopefully enjoy them and start listening to them,” said Casius Snyder ‘19.

“I think this year’s lineup is good because there are so many good small artists/ bands and a little mix of everything and it’s good to have it be different,” said Victoria Lerma ‘18.

“[…] I’m not sure The Weeknd is a big enough act for the headlining spot. Overall I think there are some great smaller acts like David Byrne from Talking Heads and there’s a brand new group called BROCKHAMPTON and I also think Beyoncé would put on a great show,” said Daniel Leon, Staff.

Nah:

“I didn’t like it because I think the main focus is rap; there’s not enough variety in the big names which is disappointing,” said Alex Robles ‘18.

“Personally, I don’t like this year’s lineup because there isn’t anybody good besides Migos,” said Aidan Lewis ‘19.

“I think that if I’m paying close to $500 for the whole weekend, there should be a broader range of music types,” said Paul Casey ‘18.

“I think this lineup is way less than what it could have been. I understand the budget stuff, but Coachella is one of the biggest festivals in the country — maybe even the world… There are more singers or slow songs than there is actual hype music […] that people want to jump to and that’ll make people feel alive,” said Grant Russell ‘19.
