School News: The Hawkview held a contest for its new logo and its very first Inktober art campaign. The football team lost the rivalry flag to Palm Desert on Oct. 18. On Oct. 27, LQ held its annual Homecoming pep rally to get students excited about the dance the following evening. Homecoming 2017 succeeded with the theme “Through the Decades,” with over one thousand tickets sold.

Local News: The Empire Polo Fields hosted the Desert Oasis music festival on the first weekend of the month. The 11th annual Paint El Paseo Pink event was held on Oct. 14. It is two-mile run from which all proceeds are donated to the Desert Cancer Foundation. An investigation began in regards to $110,000 in “financial discrepancies” within the residential community of Sun City Shadow Hills, connected to a single employee.

National News: On Oct. 1, a gunman opened fire on concertgoers at the Route 91 Harvest Music Festival in Las Vegas, claiming the lives of 58 people and injuring over 500 others — making it the nation’s largest mass shooting. On Oct. 30, actor Kevin Spacey was accused of the sexual assault against actor Anthony Rapp. More than 75 women publicly accused film producer Harvey Weinstein of sexual assault. Robert Mueller’s team issued its first indictments on its investigation regarding President Donald Trump’s election connections with Russia.

International News: Catalonia’s Parliament voted in favor of seceding from Spain, to which the prime minister responded by firing government officials and dissolving the Parliament. U.S.-Syrian forces succeeded in liberating the city of Raqqa from Islamic State militants on Oct. 17. This victory in the fight against ISIS was significant as Raqqa was a pivotal point for recruitment and planning. In response to scheduled protests by public transport drivers, Mayor Joseph Estrada of Manila, Philippines, was forced to suspend all students and government workers on Oct. 16-17. Activists continued to protest against the Philippine government’s decision to phase out jeepneys, Filipino-style jeeps and the most popular mode of public transport, aged 15 years or older, as it would eliminate hundreds of jobs.
