School News: La Quinta High School students got ready for the upcoming school year with by picking up their registration packets for the 2017-2018 school year.
Local News: At the local Shadow Ridge Marriott Resort pool, nine kids were hospitalized for breathing issues. A total of 13 people were checked by medics after a possible chemical vapor was thought to be present in one of the hotel’s pools. A section of the I-10 between Coachella and Blythe has been the location of an alarming rate of fatal accidents. On July 12, a 10-year-old boy was killed when he and three others not wearing seatbelts were thrown from a car. There have been previous crashes and the rate is increasing.
National News: In Hersheypark, Pennsylvania, fireworks from the fourth of July festivities started a brush fire. Though no one was hurt, the celebration ended within 15 minutes due to the danger. The decline of rural hospitals in the United States puts rural residents at risk, especially expectant mothers. Without these hospitals, those mothers do not have any access to prenatal care.
International News: From June 10 to Sept. 10, the World’s Fair was held in Astana, Kazakhstan. This expo’s theme was “Future Energy,” with the crucial question being, “How do we ensure safe and sustainable access to energy for all while reducing CO2 emissions?” The turnout for participating nations exceeded the expected amount with 115 states and 22 international organizations. The next World’s Fair will be held in Dubai in 2020.
