School News: On Jan. 31, four La Quinta students — Lucas Rosales ‘17, Alexis Mejia ‘17, Lauren Robison ‘17 and Kamryne Tiumula ‘17 — committed to colleges, signing their National Letters of Intent in the quad at lunch. Soccer players Rosales and Mejia signed to Cal State Fullerton and Cal Lutheran University, respectively. Softball players Robison signed to Corban University, while Tiumula committed to Saint Martin’s University.
Local News: The Indio Southwest Arts Festival took place from Jan. 26-29. The art show showcased almost 250 artists from around the world and displayed a variety of mediums, including live music, pottery, glass blowing, photography and fine art painting.
National News: Former President Obama gave his farewell address on Jan. 10, highlighting the main points throughout his presidency and policies he implemented during his eight-year term. Obama also gave heartfelt thanks to his family and Vice President Joe Biden.
International News: On Jan. 29, Alexandre Bissonnette, opened fire in Quebec, killing six people and injuring eight others. Bissonnette and one other suspect were arrested. The attack led to a wave of people showing solidarity with Muslims in a variety of ways by participating in walks and forming symbolic “rings of peace” around praying Muslims.
